Description
“I said: smile, the gloom in the sky is enough” answers the first half of the line: “He said: the sky is sad, and frowned.” It opens Smile, one of the best-known poems of Ilya Abu Madi (d. 1957). For a kitchen, an entrance, a clinic waiting room, or a friend going through a grey patch.
It is written in Nastaliq, the hanging script that Persian calligraphers shaped for poetry, in dark ink over a watercolour of sunbeams breaking through grey storm clouds over misty green hills. Printed exactly as shown.
